In Washington, the State of the Union is now measured not just by the weight of its promises, but by the length of its delivery – a clock that seems to stretch under unprecedented verbosity.

A close look at historical data dating back to 1964 reveals what can only be described as a “temporal explosion,” led by President Donald Trump, who has shattered every existing record.

Trump Sets the Pace – and the Record

When the addresses from his first and second terms are combined, Trump emerges as the figure who has monopolized broadcast airtime more than any other in U.S. history.

In his address on Tuesday, he clocked 108 minutes, breaking his own 2025 record of 100 minutes.

Trump alone accounts for five of the ten longest State of the Union addresses in American history, surpassing the historical presidential average of 60 minutes by a striking 78 percent.

Who Trails Trump in Speaking Time?

Bill Clinton ranks second as the closest former president to rival Trump in the length of his speeches. Clinton was the “king of elongation” in the 1990s, reaching his peak in 2000 with an 89-minute address. Still, the gap between “Clinton’s peak” and “Trump’s peak” stands at roughly 19 minutes – a duration that amounted to nearly 70 percent of Richard Nixon’s entire State of the Union address.

The Tally of Hours: How Long Did Presidents Speak?

An analysis of total “time mass” reveals sharp contrasts that reflect each president’s governing philosophy:

The era of brevity
Presidents such as Nixon, Carter, and Reagan were “surgeons,” delivering addresses that averaged 28 to 45 minutes apiece.

The era of expansion
With Clinton, the average rose to 74 minutes, then receded slightly under Bush and Obama, hovering around one hour.

The era of temporal dominance
With Trump’s return for a second term, the average leapt to more than 103 minutes per address.
