The war between the United States and Iran has entered a more sensitive phase, following reports of a U.S. fighter jet crashing in Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran — the first incident of its kind since the confrontation began about five weeks ago.

Israeli and U.S. media reported that one American crew member had been rescued after Iran shot down a warplane on Friday, as the conflict appeared to be escalating amid threats by President Donald Trump to launch further attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Two U.S. sources told Reuters the aircraft was a two-seat F-15E, and that a search operation was underway.

Iranian news agencies said U.S. helicopters were flying at low altitude in what appeared to be search missions, and circulated video footage showing residents firing at them.

According to U.S. sources cited by Axios, the aircraft was carrying a pilot and a weapons systems officer, both of whom managed to eject by parachute.

As of the time of writing, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) had not issued official confirmation of the aircraft type or details of the incident.

The significance lies not only in the aircraft itself, but in its implications. The potential presence of an American pilot inside Iranian territory heightens the crisis and could quickly evolve into a combat search-and-rescue operation deep in hostile territory, or become a political and media leverage point for Tehran.

In this context, Iranian platforms circulated video clips purportedly showing a U.S. HC-130 aircraft flying at low altitude while refueling HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters during a search-and-rescue mission inside Iranian airspace. The authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified, but it reflects the scale of potential operations underway on the ground.

For its part, Iran quickly advanced its narrative. State and Revolutionary Guard-affiliated media said the aircraft was shot down by air defenses belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, publishing images they said showed the wreckage, as well as photos of an ejection seat believed to belong to the targeted jet.

Authorities also called on residents to report any pilots, offering rewards for their capture. A local official was quoted as saying that anyone who “captures or kills the crew” would be officially rewarded. In a parallel development, Iranian media circulated an offer by Iranian footballer Mohammad Ansari to give all his medals to whoever finds the American pilot.

On the ground, available indicators suggest that any confirmed rescue operation would go beyond a conventional search mission, potentially becoming a complex combat operation involving support aircraft, specialized helicopters and possibly rapid-response units, increasing the risk of direct confrontation inside Iranian territory.

This comes amid broader escalation in the war. President Donald Trump signaled the possibility of expanding strikes to include infrastructure inside Iran, adding on Friday that the United States is capable of opening the Strait of Hormuz with more time, as pressure mounts on his administration to quickly bring the war with Iran to an end.

Meanwhile, Iran has continued its regional attacks, including targeting facilities and sites in the Gulf, reflecting a widening scope of the confrontation.
